Dentistry isn’t just about clean teeth and bright smiles. It’s also about a healthy jaw. Your jaw is the foundation for your oral well-being and if you’re experiencing pain or tension on a regular basis, you may be suffering from TMJ disorder.Schedule an appointment
TMJ is the common abbreviation for the Temporomandibular Joint, which acts like a hinge of sorts between your upper and lower jaw. You have two joints on either side of your jaw, close to the ear. Many people suffer from TMJ disorders, also called TMD, which causes pain or discomfort in your jaw and the surrounding muscles.
The disorder can be difficult to trace back to a single cause. Genetics, arthritis, injury, jaw alignment, and even stress, can all be potential factors. Individuals who suffer from bruxism, or teeth grinding, can also suffer from TMJ.
Occasionally TMJ disorder can go away on its own, but when pain and discomfort persist, it’s time to see your dentist. We’ll thoroughly assess your unique situation and have a candid conversation about your symptoms. Depending on your individual needs, we may treat your TMJ disorder by creating a night guard to prevent you from grinding your teeth while you sleep. For other cases, it may be necessary to reshape some teeth, adjust an uneven bite, provide orthodontic treatment or create a customized dental oral appliance.
